It is believed that aboriginal Australians first began to arrive in mainland Australia bout 50 000 years ago after migrating out of Africa about 20 000 years before. They came to Australia using primitive boats to cross over narrow stretches of water in what is now Indonesia. The journey was made easier by having much of the land being connected due to lower ocean levels.
