The Great Depression was a worldwide economic depression that began with the decline of the stock market prices on September fourth (in the U.S.) and the stalk market crash on the twenty ninth of October in the U.S. Although started in the U.S. the great depression was spread across the whole world. This depression caused huge amounts of unemployment especially in industrial settings. Thousands of shanty towns sprung up around the U.S. and many farmers became homeless because of the price drop in produce and the dust bowel drought. Roosevelt was voted into presidency during this time because of his promise that government spending would bring the U. S. out of the depression. At the start of World War II unemployment decreased dramatically at the expense of national dept.
