WW1 happened after the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria. The countries involved in the war were split into two teams. It was the Central Powers against the Allied Powers. Australia was called on later by it's mother, Great Britain, to join the Allied Powers. At the time, there was a conscription in Australia and thousands of young men had signed themselves up to fight. First they were sent to fight in Egypt which later moved to France and ten to Gallipoli where the ANZAC Forces originated and fought. The Australian women had played an important role in war. They may have not been in the fields with guns in hand, but they were the nurses who cared for these men. They were the ones who went through all the trauma and experienced hardships while serving for their country. Women at the time weren't given many options when it came to choosing their role. Women didn't even get the vote
