Eugène Scribe (1 gen 1791 anni – 1 gen 1861 anni)

Descrizione:

a French dramatist and librettist. He is known for the perfection of the so-called "well-made play" (pièce bien faite), a mainstay of popular theatre for over 100 years, and as the librettist of many of the most successful grand operas.

Spectacle on the Parisian Stage
A. The Romantic period saw two types of spectacle (at least): the virtuoso “rock star” solo
performer and grand opera.
B. Paris, the cultural capital of Europe, was the home of the largest theatrical spectacles.
1. These large events reflected a French self-perception of being the largest and, therefore, most significant nation in Europe.
2. Spectacular opera had existed in France since the time of Lully. The operas associated with the librettist Eugène Scribe were among the most famous.
3. He was musically sensitive.
4. The composers who used his librettos included Halévy, Auber, Meyerbeer, Verdi, and
Gounod.
5. While he was not particularly inventive when it came to language and often used clichés, Scribe had a gift for drama.
C. The emphasis on spectacle in opera meant that all aspects of a production were expanded,
often with innovations appropriate to each aspect.

Key Terms:

Piece bien faite: "well made play;" its form has a strong Neoclassical flavour, involving a tight plot and a climax that takes place close to the end of the play. The well-made play retains the shape of Aristotle's ideal Greek-tragedy model outlined in his Poetics. it was a super popular model that was interpreted in different ways by various artists.
