In the 1950's advertisers focused on promoting women as housewives. They were portrayed as weak and innocent and usually in a family environment. The men were portrayed as the dominant breadwinner of the house, they were represented as having all the authority and power over their wife. In this example the woman is in the kitchen cooking for her husband, she is portrayed as stupid and weak because she burnt the food however at lease she didn't burn the most important item, the beer. The wife needs the husbands forgiveness for burning the food and he makes a sarcastic and patronising comment.
