Zakuul was a model society ruled by an immortal emperor named Valkorian. In truth, Valkorian was one of Vitiate's many bodies. Following the death of Vitiate's physical body, he led the Zakuulan Empire in an invasion against both the Old Republic and the Empire. However, the body of Valkorian was soon struck down, leading to Zakuul being led by his son Arcaan and daughter Veylin. The two conquered the galaxy before their eventual defeat at the hands of a joint alliance of former Republic, Empire, Jedi, and Sith forces under the command of the hero responsible for Valkorian's death.
