Montessori was treated poorly by her male classmates. It was considered inappropriate for a woman to be in the presence of a naked body among men, so she was made to complete much of her work on her own, when the male students were finished. She was close to giving up on her studies when she was encountered a young, shoeless boy on the street, engaged with a red paper. Something about this encounter inspired her, and she continued to pursue her medical degree. Maria Montessori became one of Italy's first female doctors of medicine in July, 1896. Montessori soon had a medical practice and published original medical research.
