Events that lead to Mussolini becoming the Italian leader include the fact that Italy had been slipping into a political chaos and Mussolini declared that he would be able to help them. Soon after that he became the leader in 1922. Mussolini told the people that he would be able to give peace and help to the civilians of Italy if he was in lead/charge of the country. Mussolini was killed in World War 2. The effects from this were that he turned Italy into a one-party, totalitarian state, and then he ruled as Italy's dictator.
