Born on August 17, 1887, Garvey was an African American man who was a proponent of Black Nationalism in both Jamaica and the United States. He was a leader of a mass movement called Pan-Africanism and was also a founder of Universal Negro Improvement Association and African Communities League (UNIA-ACL). Not only did he create these groups, but he also founded the Black Star Lines: a transport that took African Americans back to their home land.
