The Heian period was named for the location of the imperial capital, which was moved from Nara to Heian-kyo (or Kyoto). It is the period in Japan's history when Buddhism, Taoism and other Chinese influences were at their peak. The Heian period was also a time when poetry, art and literature where considered very important during this era.
