Emperor Constantine had established a new capital of Constantinople near a stretch of water between Europe and Asia. After the fall of Rome, Constantinople became the capital of the eastern half of the former Roman Empire.
Despite the western half’s diffi culties, the Byzantine Empire continues strongly for the next 1000 years.

Justinian, an intelligent Byzantine Emperor, reconquers much of the Western Empire, rebuilds Constantinople and brings Roman law up to date. His powerful wife, Theodora, helps him to rule. It is beset with invading tribes and internal plots, causing many of its emperors to die violent deaths.

The magnificient church of Hagia Sophia in Constantinople, becomes the center of the Christian world.
