Grace Hopper creates one of the first computer programming languages. At a similar time, FORTRAN is developed by a group of programmers at IBM.

- COBOL was the first language discussed and formalized for business
- FORTRAN was more concise and mathematical, whereas COBOL was more like English and wordy
- High-level programming languages, used to this day
