The first Opium War was fought between Great Britain and the Qing Dynasty. The Qing dynasty wanted to get rid of the Opium trade in the ports of Canton. The Chinese did not want Opium to flow into their country. The Opium trade had drastic effects on the Chinese government and the economy of China. The British had fought this was with an aim of forcing China to allow free trade. The British had wanted full control of Chinese trade. Furthermore, the British wanted political control over China. The Treaty of Nanjing ended the first Opium War.
