The Battle of Gettysburg was a three-day battle that resulted in a Northern victory. Originally a Southern attack that tried to prove its strength to European countries, this battle proved to be a turning point for the North, as Robert E. Lee planned to stay more on the defensive instead of invading the North.

President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation speech, which stated that all slaves that are in captivity in the Confederate States of America must be freed. This did not directly free the slaves from captivity but brought about the Union’s purpose for fighting the South and caught the attention of other nations that were against slavery.
