During this period, industrial production in Germany tripled, producing annual growth rates in the sector of c4.5 per cent. By 1914, Germany was one of the world's industrial powerhouses, producing more steel per annum than both Great Britain and the United States combined. Other industries which boomed included chemicals (Germany was producing three-quarters of the world's chemical dyes by the early twentieth century) and pharmaceuticals, and even older industries like coal and potash experienced growth.
