It is the first hereditary dynasty recorded in Chinese history. It is generally believed that the Xia Dynasty passed on for 14 generations and lasted for about 471 years after 17, which was destroyed by the Shang Dynasty. Later generations often call themselves "Chinese", making it a synonym for China
