The Industrial Revolution was a period of time where, through innovation and technology, new ways of manufacturing of goods arose as well as new property laws and farming techniques.
The Industrial Revolution contributed to classical liberalism by promoting principles like Private Property, individual rights and freedoms and competition. The passing of the Enclosure Act by British government saw historically common land made private and rural farmers stripped of the rights to work the land they had lawfully farmed for generations. This enclosure of common land was a huge endorsement of the principle of private property in Britain at the time. Thousands of displaced farmers and trades people flocked to the cities to find work causing a surplus of labour, and allowing competing factory owners to set wages as low as they wanted and working hours as long as they wanted. Men, women and children were literally dying of exhaustion due to being overworked. The combination of work conditions, long hours and low wages led to an awful quality of life for them majority of people living in the cities. This, coupled with the formation of labour unions, caused the government to pass bills to establish workers rights which included minimum wages as well as restrictions to working hours of factories. This intervention of the government to establish workers rights promoted the principle of individual rights and freedoms in the lives of the British people. The classical liberal principle of competition arguably played the largest part in the advancement of the industrial revolution because business owners were forced to develop new and improved technology to aid them in manufacturing goods at a rate that would increase profits.
