Treaty of Brest-Litovsk (22 dic 1917 anni – 22 feb 1918 anni)

Descrizione:

Lenin sent Trotsky to negotiate with Germany
Trotsky kept peace negotiations going for nearly 2 months as he thought there would be a

German Revolution, however it never happened
The terms of the Treaty included:
Russia had to give up a huge area of its former western territories, including Ukraine and Baltic provinces, Finland and parts of Poland, as well as Georgia

Giving up these territories meant Russia had to lose:
74% of its coal mines and iron core
50% of its industry
76% of its railway network
27% of its farmland
26% of its population (which was 62m at the time)

Lenin was prepared to accept the terms of the treaty as he was trying to remove the opposition within Russia rather than fight other countries
The public viewed this as a shameful way to achieve peace.
Half of the Tsar’s empire had been lost along with a lot of it’s important resources
