Issue was the right to vote for African Americans
Within the south the prevalence of literacy tests and other methods served as barriers to voting
Very little national attention was put towards voting rights
The Freedom Summer was a voter registration drive within MS
The movement included many middle-class white children
Andrew Goodman, Michael Schwerner, and James Chaney(black and native to south) came to Mississippi for the drive
The three went missing after being arrested and later released at night
LBJ issued a massive search in the area
Night schools were used for voter education, day camps were held for the children
The bodies of the three men were found buried together months later, they had been shot --> chaney beaten as well
No one convicted of their murders
60,000 new voters were registered as a part of the drive
