Mellotron Release - The Mellotron was the first sampler to be released. It featured pre recorded tapes that were triggered using the keys of a keyboard. The sounds were not editable as they had to be pre-recorded.
Fairlight CMI - The Fairlight CMI was a very advanced sampler for its time. It featured a full length keyboard that triggered sounds digitally. There was also a touchscreen monitor and typewriter that could be used to edit sounds on the fly.
Synclavier - Highly influential amongst Electronic Music Producers. It provided users with a wide range of sounds and versatility. Early models featured a computer and synthesis modules, whereas later models also had a keyboard and control panel.
Nemesis Gigasampler - The first digital sampler was the Nemesis Gigasampler. Allowed users to create and edit their own samples digitally on the computer.
Akai S900 - This was Akai's first sampler. It had 12-bit stereo sampling, 7.5kHz to 40kHz variable sampling rates and a maximum of 63 seconds of sample time at 7.5kHz. It had the space for 32 samples to be stored at once.
