Gurindji people of the Northern Territory began a nine-year long protest against unfair wages and poor working conditions at the Wave Hill cattle farm.
Indigenous Australians led a protest which helped to gain land rights called the Tent Embassy Protest where they set up tents on the grass lawns in front of Parliament House in Canberra.
The indigenous Australians’ pursuit of land rights was also assisted when Prime Minister Gough Whitlam set up the Woodward Royal Commission (an official inquiry into what was going on) in 1973. The job of the Commission was to find out how it was possible for the indigenous Australians to be given land rights, when so much of Australia had already been taken from them. The Commission made recommendations about how governments could give land to indigenous Australians.
In 1975, the Wave Hill protest was finally rewarded when the Australian Prime Minister, Gough Whitlam, gave a portion of that area of land to the Gurindji people.
Ayers Rock was given back and returned to its original name 'Uluru'.
Mabo Judgement of 1992, which ruled that Indigenous Australians did own Mer(Murray) Island in the Torres Strait.
The Mabo judgement led to the 1993 Native Title Act. This Act attempted to use the specific case of the Mabo judgement to make a general law which would give all Aboriginal people the means and the right to make land rights and native title claims. The Wik decision of 1996 gave indigenous Australians further land rights.
