THE ELECTION OF 1860 Lincoln and the new Republican Party win the election, facing a divided country that their predecessor (Buchanan) did nothing to stop.
BATTLE OF ANTIETAM - September 17th, 1862 - After defeating General John Pope in the Second Battle of Bull Run, Lee charged forward to Antietam Creek, Maryland. McCellan was given copies of the South's plans and was able to defeat the Confederacy in the bloodiest battle in American history (23k casualties). This was a pivotal moment in the war. Britain and France had been edging closer to involvement; the South had believed a chance at permanent independence. After this battle, the Union became the d
GETTYSBURG - JULY, 1863 - Gettysburg marked the Confederacy's final attempt at winning the war. Indeed, Davis sent a delegation with a white flag to negotiate terms of surrender. Instead, the South was defeated, and Lincoln delivered his famout speech about the preservation of liberty.
EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION - January 1st, 1863 - After many previous drafts, Lincoln officially published the Emancipation Proclamation. This declared all slaves in the Confederacy free. Effectively, no slave was freed. This was also a political stunt to prevent Britain from interfering with the Union's interests.
LINCOLN ASSASSINATED - April 15th, 1865 - While the war was over, the country had much healing to do. The killing of Lincoln would prove quite harmful to the nation, as his successor was terrible.
LINCOLN RE-ELECTED - 1864 - The Republican Party joined with the War Democrats and became the Union Party. As more and more Union victories came as the election crept up, Lincoln became the popular choice.
13TH AMENDMENT RATIFIED - December 6th, 1864 - This finally ended slavery across the entire United States. While Emancipation had been a suggestion at best, this action was decisive and legitimate.
LEE SURRENDERS TO GRANT - April 9th, 1965 - Unions soldiers cornered the Confederates at Hampton, Virginia. The Union gave generous terms of surrender and the war ended. Lincoln visited a few days later.
BATTLE OF BULL RUN - July 21st, 1861 - After a lot of media hype, Lincoln and the new Union army were desperate to prove superiority in the upcoming war. They got beat by "Stonewall" Jackson and his Confederate army in a harsh reality check. Despite this loss, the North quickly recovered. The South, however, got very cocky and undisciplined, meaning that they were less prepared for the future conflict.
HAMPTON ROADS CONFERENCE - February 3rd, 1865 - The South, recognizing imminent defeat, attempted to negotiate with Lincoln's representatives. Neither side would budge on anything, so no resolution was made.
FALL OF PORT HUDSON - July 9th 1863 - The Union was able to gain control of the Mississippi and cut off Texas and Arkansas.
BATTLE OF FREDRICKSBURG - December 1862 - While the Union outnumbered the Confederacy, they lost Fredricksburg and had high casulties. General Burnside was removed of command and Hooker took his place.
GRANT TAKES FORT HENRY AND DONELSON - February 16th, 1862 - Ulysses S. Grant and his army had an instrumental impact on securing the neutral Kentucky fort from Southern control, and opened paths for the Union across the Kentucky-Tennessee border.
THE SEVEN DAYS' BATTLE - May 31st, 1862 - This was a Confederate Victory and a triumph for Robert E Lee - despite over 10,000 casulties on both sides. The battle ended up being the decisive cause of the extention of the war.

UNION BLOCKADES CONDEFERACY - April 1861 thru June 1865 - Limited shipments & economic flow for the South
