Stolen Generation 1970 The Stolen generation were children taken away from their families during the Aborigines Protection Act. The cause of this was because of the government abusing their power. They wanted more power over the lives of the aboriginal families and thought it was better if those aboriginal children were to grow up in a white society, with white parents, with their religion, culture and language. This had a huge negative impact on their lives and loss of culture and religion
National Apology 2008 The National Apology Day was a day where Australia said sorry to the lives of the children taken away during the Aborigines Protection Act. This was a step for the First nations people as they were recongnised for how they were mistreated.
Indigenous People Given The right to vote 1962 During this time the first nations people and their supporters set up campaigns, petitions and strikes to fight for their rights. This eventually worked as they finally gained the right to vote
Aboriginal Land Right Act 1976 In 1976 traditional lands were being destroyed and taken away from the rightful owners. In a result of this them and their supporters protests and finally in 1976 were granted the right to vote.
Aborigines Protection Act 1969 During this time period starting from early 1915s- 1969 the government used his power to gain control over the first nations peoples lives granting them the power to remove any arboriginal child from their familie if they think thats whats best for them. This eventually led to the stolen generation.
The Aboriginal Day of Mourning 1938 On this day the Abroiginal people had a day of mourning about all the violence and discrimination they had to experience and face.
Indigenous Referendum 1967 On this day after 10 years of campaigning a special referendum was held in the Australian Constitution on whether or not the first nations people would be recognised. Almost 91% of people voted yes and from then on they were treated as equal citizens and counted in the population as well as having special laws just for them. This was a big step of their lives and helped them be treated better.
First Nations People Counted in Census 1971 Due to the Indigenous referendum that granted the first nations people to be treated equally and fairly in 1971 they were finally counted in the Census. They were counted in the population treated fairly and this was another big step in their lives as they were slowly being treated as equal citizens.
William Cooper Inspirational Leader 1936 William copper fought for the First Nations peoples rights his entire life. He was a leader who inspired many to show them justice as he helped organise the first aAbroginal day of mourning.
The Gurindji Strike1966 In 1966 Gurindji domestic workers and their families refused to work because of land ownership. There were many protest and due to this act it helped influence the bill that passed that granted first nations people to claim land.
Aboriginal Tent Embassy 1972 On this day some aboriginal men protested in Canberra for land right policies. This spread the word of their rights and this is still going on today just with a different goal.
Mabo Decision On 1992 a group of Torres Strait Islander people led by Eddie Mambo were on an island. The high court recognised their rights as the Australian rights to land law. This made them included as they were recongised as first settlers orfirst people here.
Nicky Winmars Stand 1993 Nicky Winmars was an AFL player and what he did was inspirational. Some of the audience were yelling racial slurs but he yelled back im proud to be black. This was a big thing as it just shows how far they have come and how they are now treated better and more fairly
