John Dalton- father of the atomic theory; he discussed how atoms combine in the law of multiple proportions as his atomic model
JJ Thomson- discovered the first subatomic particle--negatively charged electrons using the cathode ray tube; his atomic model was the plum pudding model (atoms were solidly positive with electrons floating in the positive)
Ernest Rutherford- "discovered" the proton & that the atom is mostly empty space with a nucleus with mass and surrounding electrons; worked with Chadwick, Bohr, and Thomson
Niels Bohr- created the planetary atomic model in which the electrons orbit the nucleus; worked with Chadwick and Rutherford
James Chadwick- discovered the neutron; worked with Rutherford and Bohr and confirmed their findings
Albert Einstein- discovered the photoelectric effect; quantum theory; he also established Brownian motion to establish electron distance from the nucleus
Dimitri Mendeleev- arranged the first periodic table--based on atomic mass
Henri Becquerel- discovered radioactivity using Uranium salt
The Curies- used Becquerel's discovery to discover the elements Radium and Polonium; coined term "radioactivity"
Werner Heisenberg- used a gamma ray microscope to determine electron position (the electron cloud); also recognized the uncertainty principle; worked with Schrödinger
Erwin Schrödinger- worked with Heisenberg to discover a more accurate representation of the electron cloud
Henry Moseley- discovered the atomic number of elements using x-rays; made the periodic table more accurate
Democritus- atomos (later known as atoms) are solid spheres that cannot be broken down any farther; seashell experiment
Aristotle- theory involved the overlap of the elements (air, water, earth, & fire) and 4 physical properties (hot, dry, cold, & wet); his theory set atomic theory back almost 1000 years
Thales of Miletus- theorized all substances were a combination of simpler substances and that water was the nature of matter
