Abraham Ortelius and Alexander Von Humboldt first observed the puzzle fit of the coastlines of continents. Ortelius saw how the shapes of Africa and South America appeared to fit together, his and Von Humboldt's were the first piece of evidence that pieces of Earth's lithosphere moves. I used Article 1.
Alfred Wegener formed a hypothesis of continental drift. Wegener started to form a hypothesis based on some evidence that could support his theory. One piece of evidence he used to explain his theory was that many continents looked as tho they could fit together. Another piece of evidence he used was that animal and plant fossils have been found on different continents, and the couldnt have swam across the oceans. I used article 2.
Arthur Holmes discovered mantle convection currents. Holmes proposed the theory of convection currents in Earth. He observed when things heated they become less dense and rose, as they go up the cool and become more dense and sink. he believed this pressure could crack and move the continents. I used article 3.
Harry Hess proposed the theory of seafloor spreading. The Mid-Atlantic Ridge was found in the 1960's. It is 40,000 miles long. Some evidence that supports Hess's theory is that rock closer to the ridge is younger, and as you get further away from the ridge is older. Another piece of evidence is that the seafloor is younger than the continents, that means older crust gets reabsorbed into the mantle. I used article 5.
Frederick Vine and Drummond Matthews discovered magnetic striping on the ocean floor. Studies started to show that the magnetic poles switch over time. On the ocean floor there are magnetic stripes, and they show when there was a normal or reversed magnetic pole. I used article 5.
