First National Road. - 1806 The US congress gave funding to build the first national road, stretching from Maryland to Illinois. The road was first used by riders on horseback, and later by trucks and cars.
First Railroad - 1830 The Baltimore & Ohio railroad was Americas first railway structure. The tracks where made with wood, and an iron covering, they stretched 28 miles. The train had a steam engine. It transported people and freight.
First Railroad - 1836 Canada's first railroad was opened in Quebec. It was called the Champlain and St. Lawrence railroad, and had a 16 mile track. It helped connect the different cities of Canada.
The First Steamboat 1789 James Watt developed the first steamboat. It was 45 foot long, and carried passengers and freight between Philadelphia and New Jersey. This was a breakthrough invention in transport over water, as it helped develope more advanced boats.
The Telephone 1876 Alexander Bell invented the simple telephone. It took sound waves and converted them to an electric current. This phone was later developed by Thomas Edison. It was prehaps the greatest breakthrough in the development of modern technology.
The First Car 1896 Henry Ford developed the first automobile. It was ethanol powered, and was actually called a "Quadracycle". It had a steering rod, not a wheel. This innovation lead to the development of cars around the world. Something so rare and new became a normal part of life.
The Television 1927 The TV was first demonstrated in San Fransisco, by Philo Farnsworth. This TV was black and white, and very simple. However, it paved the path for later inventions and modifications.
The Mobile Phone - 1973 Martin Cooper invented the worlds first mobile phone. He tested it in Manhattan, by making a call to New Jersey. This invention started the growth of the mobile phones we use today.
The Snowmobile - 1937 The snowmobile was invented by Canada's Joseph Bombardier. It was a simple machine that resembled a car. It was later developed into the Ski-Doo (modern snow mobile). This was important for Canadians, since their cold climate often made transport by cars immpossible.
Commercial Jet Liner - 1949 North Americans first commercial plane, or plane that flies passengers, was invented by James Floyd in Canada. It was called a "Jetliner" and was the basis of later airplane developments.
The Walkie Talkie - 1942 Invented by 2 Canadians for military purposes, the Walkie Talkie a global technology tool used by millions. It allowed people to communicate through radio waves, similar to a mobile phone.
The Automobile - 1867 The Canadian automobile was invented by Henry Taylor. It was nicknamed the "steam buggy". Taylor's invention was overshadowed by the founder of Mercedes Benz, Karl Benz, who built a similar car in 1886.
Standard Time - 1878 Although its not a concrete thing, the invention of standard time helped communication worldwide, not just in Canada. Sir Sandford Fleming developed the concept of synchronizing clocks into an order determined by a countries location. It allowed easier communication through the world.
