Yacht Mignonette sets sail from Southhampton, England to Sydney, Australia. Four crew members Tom Dudley, Edward Stephens, Richard Parker, Edmund Brooks. (copy)
1000 miles west of Cape of Good Hope, South Africa, huge wave strikes the Mignonette, ship sinks. All four crew members survive and climb onto a life boat. Only food are two can of turnips and little drinking water.
On second day of shipwreck, starving crew members eat the first can of turnips.
Fourth day since shipwreck, crew members catch and eat a sea turtle. They collect small amounts of rainwater with their raincoats. Parker gets sick because he drinks seawater
Day 19 since shipwreck, Dudley and Stephens propose a plan to kill a member of the crew with the intention of eating them. They confer with Brooks to cast lots, Brooks disagrees. (7 days without food, 5 day without water)
On the 20th day since shipwreck, Dudley kills Richard Parker with a pen knife to the jugular with Stephen's consent.
Dudley and Stevens agree secretly to kill Parker because he was weakest.
For four days, all three crewmen feed on Parker's flesh and drink his blood. They were rescued by a passing vessel and were taken back to England.
