START: The APRAnet continues to grow by adding University of Hawaii's ALOHAnet.Networks from Londons University college and Royal Radar Establishment in Norway are added to the ARPAnet, but the additions made it hard for the packet switched networks to integrate.Vinton Cerf, Computer Scientist, begins to try to solve the issues with the integration of the many Packet switching networks, by formulating a way to allow the many small "mini-networks" to communicate with each other. His solution was called the Transmission control protocol, allowing distant computers to communicate.Paul Mockapetris creates the DNS at the University of southern California. The creation of the DNS allowed the current state of the internet to be more than just a technological development for educational purpose by creating the hierarchical system of naming hosts that is the DNS. Through the many servers located throughout the internet the internet expanded way faster than it couldve if it was centrally controlled.The NSF notices the importance of the growth of the internet in terms of its commercial uses, resulting in them partnering with the Merit networks which are under the assistance of IBM and MCI. NSF then implements the T1 and T3 backbone allowing to increase internet speed.At the University of Illinois researchers and students develop a browser by the name of "Mosaic", which became a browser that was easy to use through clickable links. After this, the US congress allowed for the commercial use of the internet and online commerce finally became a thing.The internet becomes available to the Public, and all commercialization restrictions on the internet are lifted, but the main uses for the internet were still mostly business or academics related. leading into the creation of Hotmail and one of the first viral videos, which was of a 3D, dancing baby.Jimmy Wales creates wikipedia, which would become one of the most referenced if not the most referenced internet encyclopedias, regardless of its credibility. Since the beginning it was immensely popular with over 20,000 entries in its first year.The emergence of social networks had commenced with the creation of Myspace, which was primarily used by musicians, and LinedIn, which allowed employers and job seekers to communicate. With this communication era of the internet also came skype, an IP calling and messaging provider.Youtube is founded, which is a major turning point in regards to how people use the internet because since its creation youtube has become a very versatile platform ranging in areas of entertainment all the way to formal education.Google chrome is created and is used by many internet users due to its user friendly properties and remains the most recommended internet browser available.Edward Snowden, former CIA and NSA employee exposes a classified government surveillance program of data, due to him not finding it just or moral. This leads to modern day internet users to be weary of what information they store or search for online.Leonard Kleinrock, another MIT scientist creates packet switching, which is a new way for computers to send information by dividing the information so that each packet takes a different route, further bolstering the security of the ARPAnet which without packet switching would've been as susceptible to threats as telephone lines.ARPAnet
J.C.R Licklider, an MIT scientist creates a communications network for government officials so that they may have a means of communication just in case the soviets damage or corrupt telephone lines.LOGIN and node-to-node
The first ARPAnet message is sent and it read "LOGIN". The message was delivered from a UCLA lab computer to a lab computer in Stanford. Despite the small size of the message it still crashed the ARPAnet and the Stanford computer only recieved the first two letters.
