Wagner came up with the idea for Lohengrin around 1845. He was inspired by the legend of the "Holy Grail" through the poems of "Wolfram von Eschenbach and the anonymous legend of Lohengrin" (Peterson, 2023). Although he wasn't religious, he did believe in divinity and godliness.
In Act 3 of the opera, the “Bridal Chorus” can be heard when characters Elsa and Lohengrin return to the bridal chamber after their wedding. Once they arrive, the couple is said to express their love to each other (TheAmericanWedding, 2009). As of today, the “Bridal Chorus” is one of the most popular wedding marches used at weddings and churches. Although the music was not originally connected to weddings, it is now a number one choice for many different brides all around the world (TheAmericanWedding, 2009).
Going back to the song itself, it was made as a single movement piece and is meant to be played as an orchestra. It was apart of Wagner's opera - Lohengrin. As for musical elements, the dynamic range is medium as the notes go from high to low. The texture is thick as the song has many layers. The melody is emotionally tense. The form of the composition has repetition (A B). The timbre of the singer’s voice is rough as they use the high registers of their voice.
Overall, the song "Bridal Chorus from Lohengrin" composed by Richard Wagner, connects to the Romantic Era as it conveys a message of joy and happiness. This can be seen with its connection to wedding's and how it can be a happy day for married couples.
