Description: This package of five laws aimed to resolve the dispute over slavery in the territories gained after the Mexican-American War. It included the admission of California as a free state, the organization of Utah and New Mexico territories with the issue of slavery to be decided by popular sovereignty, and the strengthening of the Fugitive Slave Act.
Impact: The compromise temporarily eased tensions, but the enforcement of the Fugitive Slave Act angered Northerners, while Southerners were dissatisfied with the restrictions on slavery in the West.
