Google introduces Willow, its latest quantum computing chip, marking a significant advancement in the field. Willow comprises 105 qubits and has demonstrated the capability to perform computations in under five minutes that would take the fastest supercomputers 10 septillion years. This achievement addresses longstanding challenges in quantum error correction by showing that increasing the number of qubits can reduce errors, a critical step toward developing large-scale, practical quantum computers. Despite this progress, experts, including Google’s Quantum AI director Charina Chou, note that Willow is not yet capable of breaking modern cryptography, as such feats would require millions of qubits and are estimated to be at least a decade away.
