1 gen 1078 anni - The church appointed its bishops and abbots, but it was the nobles who owned the land, and they were the ones who had control over who got "invested" into a paying job on their land. Under Pope Gregory VII (1073–1085), the Roman Catholic Church was determined to end this duality. This produced the Investiture controversy which began in the Holy Roman Empire in 1078.
