Created by Japanese artist, Shigetaka Kurita, he wanted to design an attractive interface that would convey information in a simple, yet succinct way, much like the pictures he saw while watching the weather channel.

His original selection of emojis preferred symbols over faces so that users had more variety in terms of relaying information. He thought these emojis were more about expressing information than emotion (Blagdon, 2013).

They rose to popularity quickly, but were only available for Japanese mobile users at the time. Outside users had to somehow hack their devices to be able to use emojis (Pardes, 2018).
