The Society for Human Rights. was founded by Henry Gerber in 1924. Gerber founded the foundation after being put into a mental hospital for his sexuality. It is the first gay rights organization ever established in the United States. The society, located in Chicago, received a charter from the state of Illinois and produced the first ever American publication for queer people, titled Friendship and Freedom. The Society for Human Rights begins the steps of LGBTQIA+ people into the legislative world, although the first Supreme Court case addressing homosexuality would not be for another sixty years. Unfortunately, the society disbanded not long after its founding due to political pressure.
