Grant forwards the letter to the Secretary of the Treasury, Benjamin Bristow, with a note, or Endorsement (pages 231-232) expressing his desire that the Whiskey Ring prosecution should “Let no guilty man escape. . . .” Grant’s statement was widely published around the country beginning on 08/10/1875
