The Spanish iniquisition was founded by the Catholic Kings when they obtained papal license to operate it as an official royal agency. It was offically meant to ferret out those who secretly practiced Judaism or Islam, but Charles V charged it with the responsbility of detecting Protestant heresy. Strict Roman Catholicism prevailed in Spain and nobles were deterred from adopting Protestant views out of political ambition.
