The Tongzhi Emperor, born in 1856, was the 10th emperor of the Qing dynasty, ruling from 1861 to 1875, though his reign was largely controlled by his mother, Empress Dowager Cixi, and his empress dowager aunt, Ci'an. He was the son of the Xianfeng Emperor and the cousin of the Guangxu Emperor, who succeeded him after his early death without an heir.
