James II, Charles II’s brother, succeeded him and he openly supported the Catholic church and had a very authoritarian stance. He murdered opponents and defied the Parliament constantly. People were expecting that maybe one of his protestant daughters could succeed him and all of these conflicts would end. But a son was born and that made things worse.
