Deux ans plus tard, al-Mahdīya fut assiégée par le chef hilalien Mālik b. ʿAlawī. Lorsque Mālik réalisa que ses forces ne pouvaient pas capturer al-Mahdīya, il tourna son attention vers Qayrawān et en prit possession.
