Marissa Harvey, 15, was visiting from NYC to see her sister. At about 1:30pm on Monday, March 27, 1978, Marissa was dropped off in Golden Gate Park on 44th or 45th Ave near the windmill to go horseback riding. She failed to return home or contact her sister that evening.

At 7:51pm the next day, Tuesday, March 28, 1978, officers responded to 48th Ave and Anza (Sutro Heights Park) on a report of a dead body. The body was that of Marissa. She had been sexually assaulted and strangled.

On December 16 2021, police arrested a suspect in the case who they identified using DNA: Mark Stanley Personette, of Conifer, CO, was 76 years old when arrested, and 32 at the time of Marissa's murder. Personette has a history of arrests, including one on charges of assault in 1979 in NJ, and SFPD urged other LE agencies to review their unsolved SA-related homicides of young women to determine if Personette could be connected. Personnette was arraigned in a SF court and charged with murder on January 27, 2022. I could not find further information on the results of the charges. As of October 2024, Marissa's case is still featured on SFPD's cold case page.
