One morning, the Fat Controller is informed that Henry won't pull his passenger train. He goes to Tidmouth sheds and finds Gordon, Henry, and James all on strike. They demand not to shunt their own coaches and that someone do it for them. The Fat Controller decides to let Edward shunt the coaches; however, the other engines bully him for it, saying that it's not like a tender engine to shunt. In response, the Fat Controller goes to an engine to purchase a new tank engine. He finds the engine, a small green saddle tank, and names him Percy. Percy is placed as the new pilot engine at Knapford station. After Edward shows Percy the basics, the Fat Controller shuts up the big engines at the sheds and lets Edward and Thomas run the main line, while Percy runs the branch-line.
