One day, Thomas was shunting trucks in the yard and noticed two strange crane and a coach. His driver explained that this was the Breakdown train, which helped fallen engines back onto the rails. Suddenly, an engine came rushing past the yard; the signal was raised; and the foreman shouted that he was off the line. Then Thomas bursted into action and rushed to the scene with the Breakdown train. The engine in question was James, a black mix-traffic engine, who was having his first day. After helping to clean up the mess, Thomas brought James back to the sheds where the Fat Controller gave Thomas his own branch line and coaches as a reward for his quick thinking.
