Taking after his father, Sancho I went right to work constructing many castles, towns and other infrastructure around Portugal. The new king grants charters to some municipalities with the intention of being able to organize the defense of the territory through the settlement of a large population and economic activities.

Sancho I also allows the arrival of foreign settlers, granting them land with the obligation of cultivating and defending them. He donates land and castles to religious and military orders with the intention of building a powerful defense.
