In 330, Constantine moved the capital to Byzantium and renamed it Constantinople after himself.
The eastern part of the empire could be more easily governed from Constantinople.
The city of Rome (in the west) had many conflicting political parties that threatened the security of the emperor.
After Constantine’s death, the empire was again split into eastern and western halves
By 395, the split was permanent.
The East became known as the Byzantine Empire.
