At this time in history, students would go to elementary school for eight years and high school for four years. Educators began to notice that this was not working how they wanted. Upper elementary students were focusing on basic skills and were not able to go into depth with the topics. They wanted a middle ground for students to be able to go into more depth before they moved on to high school. They created a junior high school for this purpose. This way students were able to be more prepared for high school classes and have a more specialized curriculum. Juniors high is what eventually turned into middle schools were are a very important step in schooling today.
