-Strategic Arms Limitation Talks Agreement

-only 100 ABM systems allowed on each side

-number of ICBMs + SLBMs limited; USSR allowed more ICBMs as USA had more power in other areas (e.g. strategic bombers)

-pledge to "do their utmost to avoid military confrontation" + "exercise restraint" in international relations

-limitations: didn't cover all types of nuclear weapon (e.g. MIRVs), so it didn't stop the arms race

-lasted 5 years (SALT II talks from Nov. 1972)

-USSR thought SALT I would save money on expensive arms race
