- At first protesting/striking for 8 hour work day org. by Knights of labor
- Large rally in Haymarket Square, shortly after striking began at McCormick Harvesting Machine Co.
- Police were attempting to disperse the crowd (shooting and clubbing innocent people) when a bomb exploded
- 11 killed, more than 100 injured
- 8 anarchists were put on trial, 4 of them executed
- The public/media linked the bombing to the Knights of Labor, leading to their downfall
