3 feb 905 anni - Battle of Marcianopolis of 905
Descrizione:
The early defeats of this round of war were enough to make Romanos II take a drastic step, he decide to lead the army personally and march north to face Simeon. The subsequent battle was a major defeat for the Roman army however; Simeon and his Bulgar army drove off the Roman cavalry in a long battle, and then turned on Romanos's infantry, slaughtering many and sending the rest into panicked flight. Romanos himself was cut off from the Romans, and Marcianopolis fell rapidly, with the remnant of the Roman army inside deciding to withdraw further south, rather than try and hold out with no hope of reinforcement. Romanos managed to reach Mesembria, but over half of the army he had led north was dead and many of the rest had deserted.
