642 saw Justinian II moving his army to Iconium, and then launched a counterattack to retake Kaisereia. Once again however his efforts were met with failure, as Mu'awiya's army once again defeated the Romans, this time inflicting nearly ten thousand casualties on the Imperial army.

The subsequent retreat saw Justinian pull back off the plateau entirely, leaving it to be conquered by the Arabi. Amorion and Iconium both fell, leaving the Romans with no positions on the interior, instead holding Dorylaeum as a forward base.
