Pethtel (27yo) & Shain (30yo), both female and living in San Francisco, were last seen alive at ~12:10am on Mon., Dec. 3 at Shain's address of 1875 Oak St in SF. At that time, they indicated that they were going to hitchhike to southern CA, and/or to Los Angeles.

Early morning of Dec. 3, at ~8am: a truck driver from Livermore, named Owen Taylor, discovers the bodies of two women. The location of the bodies are described as follows in various sources: alongside and Interstate 580 off-ramp near Pleasanton; near/alongside a "railroad road" near the Santa Rita Rehabilitation Center at Pleasanton/in the Livermore area; and lying on the shoulder of Fallon Rd (in Pleasanton) near the approach to US 50.

Their bodies were found 20yd apart from each other. Their purses & suitcase, and/or "the contents of their purses and a suitcase" were scattered nearby. They had been shot to death with a .38 caliber revolver. Shain was shot twice in the chest, while Pethtel had been shot twice in the back and once in the head.
(Just from this description, as well as the information that they were found 20yd apart, it seems that if they were killed where they were found, then Shain was shot twice while facing her killer, then Pethtel turned and began to run away; while doing so, she was shot twice in the back and collapsed 20yd away from Shain, and was shot once in the head.)

They were both fully clothed when found. Pethtel was wearing a gold sweater; blue Levis; and a long-hooded velvet coat with a star & crescent embroidered on the right side. Shain was wearing a wine-colored sweater; wine-colored Levis; and a "car-length" black imitation fur coat. they were both also wearing shoes. Photos of mannequins wearing all of Shain & Pethtel's belongings are included in the 12/8 newspaper clipping.

They were killed ~3hr before being discovered, and multiple sources state that they were killed sometime after 5am on Dec. 3; this puts the time of their discovery at ~8am. One article states that in the time between the last sighting of them and their deaths, "they could have accepted a ride from someone and stopped at a service station or restaurant." According to Google Maps, driving directly from 1875 Oak St, SF, to Fallon Rd, Pleasanton, takes ~55min-1hr 5min.

Shain had identification on/near her, and was positively identified soon after her discovery by a cousin and an aunt from Niland, Imperial County, CA. According to Ancestry.com, she was born Michael Marie McDonald on Sept. 24, 1943 in Beloit, Indiana. By 1959, she was attending Our Lady of Providence High School in Clarksville, Indiana. Her married(?) last name is spelled Shain or Shane.

Pethtel's first name is variously listed as (in order of sort of decreasing frequency): Cathy, Cathie, or Kathy. Newspapers noted that she also used the alias Sue Morningstar, and she had a second ID on her body with the name Judy Plate. The real Judy Plate, 20yo, of Key West, FL, was found alive and well in FL by the following day. Prior to definitive identification of Pethtel's body, when investigators had tentatively IDed her as either Cathy Sue Pethtel or her alias Sue Morningstar, authorities had stated that they believed she had parents in WV and a brother in OH. By Dec. 8, she had been positively IDed as Pethtel. According to Ancestry.com, she was born Cathy Sue Williams on May 17, 1946 in West Virginia. In 1964, she married a man named James Roy Pethtel in Wood, West Virginia; their daughter, Angela Sue Pethtel, was born on Mar. 16, 1965 in Ohio.

Three (3) other young women and girls were found murdered in the Oakland & Livermore areas within a span of two days: Wendy Louise Martin (17yo), as well as Sylvia Pauly (16yo) & Micaela Crandall (16yo). The three separate cases (Shain & Pethtel; Martin; Pauly & Crandall) did not seem to be related, and were all investigated separately.

Shain & Pethtel were included in Robert Graysmith's list of possible Zodiac victims, though he had listed Cathy's last name as Fechdel instead of Pethtel. The pair are variously considered online to be possible Zodiac, SRHM, and/or AM victims.

Former San Francisco Mayor Joseph Alioto suspected that Pethtel & Shane were victims of the Death Angels/Zebra killers. However, he is known for instating racist measures to solve the Zebra killings (i.e. stopping & searching every black man on the street), and is likely to have blown the entire thing out of proportion. Some users on Zodiac forums also believe that Pethtel & Shane could be Zebra victims.
